Danske Commodities Makes Strides In The UK Market With Its First Battery Storage Deal

04 July 2023: Danske Commodities, an energy trading company, has entered into its inaugural optimisation agreement for a battery storage asset in the United Kingdom. Danske Commodities has made an official declaration regarding its recent commitment to a three-year contract for the utilisation of a 25 MW battery storage facility known as Blandford Road.

According to the agreement, the company will offer services for Blandford Road that include market access, balancing and optimisation. The energy trader plans to make use of its completely automated algorithmic system to maximise profits in both the wholesale and ancillary services markets.

Equinor is the owner of the asset, which is being developed and operated by Noriker Power Limited. Noriker Power Limited is a prominent British company specialising in the development and operation of energy assets and it is partially owned by Equinor, holding a 45% stake. According to Danske Commodities, Blandford Road will contribute in addressing the fluctuating power generation in the UK renewables market and is scheduled to become operational in Autumn 2023.

“We are proud to announce Danske Commodities’ first optimisation agreement with a battery storage asset in the UK. With 15 years of experience from UK power markets, we will apply our trading expertise to optimise battery storage assets and help provide much needed flexibility to intermittent power generation. We currently manage the biggest portfolio of batteries in Denmark, and we look forward to building on this experience as we take on our first battery in the UK,” said Anders Kring, VP, Head of European Power Trading at Danske Commodities in the company’s official press release.

Danske Commodities presently possesses a collection of contractual agreements for renewable energy assets totaling 2,000 MW in the United Kingdom. This includes a portion of the energy procured from Dogger Bank, the largest offshore wind farm globally.

With this strategic move, Danske Commodities continues to demonstrate its dedication to drive the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. The company's expertise in energy trading combined with its growing portfolio of renewable assets, positions it as a key player in the UK's evolving energy landscape. As Danske Commodities continues to forge new partnerships and explore innovative energy storage solutions, it is poised to make a lasting impact on the renewable energy sector in the UK and beyond.
